About This Scholarship
The Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship is offered by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to international students wishing to study at Japanese universities.
For 2026, scholarships are available across multiple categories: Research Students, Undergraduate Students, Teacher Training Students, Japanese Studies Students, College of Technology Students, and Specialized Training College Students.
The Research Student scholarship (the most popular category) supports graduate-level study and research at Japanese national universities.
Benefits include:
- Monthly allowance of ¥117,000–¥145,000 (amounts revised annually)
- Round-trip air ticket
- Full tuition and enrollment fees waived
- Japanese language training before university enrollment
- Possible extension for degree enrollment after research student period
Eligibility Requirements
- Citizen of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan
- Below 35 years of age (varies by category)
- Bachelor's degree (for research students pursuing Master's/PhD)
- Good health and adequate Japanese or English language proficiency
- Must apply through Japanese embassy/consulate in home country
- Must agree to study in Japan for the full scholarship period
- Must not be enrolled in a Japanese university at time of application
- Not holding another Japanese government scholarship
