About This Scholarship
The Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) offers a limited number of scholarships each year to outstanding students from developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies abroad. Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis for postgraduate studies (Master's degree only) at recognized universities in the US, Canada, UK, and other countries.
The AKF scholarship is distinctive in that it is offered as a grant/loan combination: typically 50% grant and 50% interest-free loan. Upon completion of studies, recipients repay the loan portion over a flexible period while building their careers.
The scholarship covers:
- Tuition fees
- Living expenses
- Return airfare
- Study-related materials
AKF scholarships are awarded in specific thematic areas:
- Economic development and enterprise
- Education and early childhood
- Health and nutrition
- Civil society and rural development
Eligibility Requirements
- Citizens of developing countries where AKF operates (including Bangladesh, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and others — check country eligibility)
- Applying for a first Master's degree (not PhD or second Master's)
- Demonstrated academic excellence
- Proven commitment to the development of the applicant's home country/community
- No other means to finance study abroad
- Acceptance or pending acceptance at a recognized foreign university
- Preference given to students in the fields of health, education, rural development, and civil society
